Why did Emily VanCamp Leave The Resident? In The Resident, it’s always a matter of life or death. Fans are always scared that something bad will happen to their favorite characters because there is so much going on. Grey’s Anatomy and other hospital dramas have shown that doctors seem to have the worst luck. Emily VanCamp’s time on the show as Nicolette “Nic” Nevin came to an end at the end of Season 5.
Nic was at the center of many of the show’s most important plots, and her death in Episode 3 of Season 5 was a huge blow to both her coworkers at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital and longtime viewers of the show. Read on to find out more about Nic’s past on the Fox medical thriller and what might happen to him in the future.
Why did Emily VanCamp Leave The Resident?
Deadline says that Emily Vancamp asked to be let out of her contract near the end of Season 4 before Nic’s pregnancy was made public. Nic’s time on The Resident ended when it was revealed that the character she played had been in a car accident. Nic missed the first two shows of Season 5 because she was on a wellness retreat (and who could blame her after a rough pregnancy?). She sent her on-screen husband Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) a text message saying she was “almost home” but didn’t say anything else.
In Episode 3, when Conrad opens his door, two police officers are there to tell him something bad. Nic’s injuries were too bad to fix, but she could still save lives by donating her organs after she died. There had been hints on the internet for months that Emily’s character was going to die, including on the well-known news site Deux Moi.
What is Emily Vancamp Statement About Leaving The Resident?
Emily said that she left The Resident because her “priorities” had changed, but that she was “grateful” for her time on the show. “I loved doing The Resident so much for the four years I was on it,” she told Deadline.
“We’ve been talking about my going for some time now. I worked on network TV for a long time, but then my goals changed. “I think there comes a time in every woman’s life—in everyone’s life—when work becomes less important and family becomes more important. That happened to me while I was making the show.
“Because we did so many shows in different cities and then added Covid, most of us didn’t get to see our families for almost a year. “It really proved to me that my heart is with my family right now.”
Emily VanCamp’s Pregnancy Happened at the Same Time
VanCamp and her character Nic were both pregnant at the same time, though not at the same time. This gave the actor the chance to tell the world when she was ready. VanCamp told ‘Deadline’ in October of last year, after Nic’s sudden departure from the show at the end of season five, “It was very interesting, mostly because I’m very private about my family life.”
“It let us keep the pregnancy a secret and do something just the two of us for a while. Just having a little space was a beautiful thing in and of itself. The time wasn’t quite right, so I had to wear a fake belly over my real one. It was nice to not have to think so much about all of those things after all the Marvel stuff.”
Emily VanCamp’s Bittersweet Exit From The Resident
Emily told Deadline in an interview after leaving the show that her departure was mutually agreed upon. “I had so much fun working on The Resident for four years. Usually, you hear about someone leaving a show because something bad happened or because there was bad blood between the cast members. In this case, though, it’s just the opposite,” she said. “We all love and respect each other, and this choice was not easy for anyone, but it was the right one for me. I’m glad that people were understanding and kind to me.”
Emily also talked about how, when her daughter Iris was born in August 2021, her goals changed. “I worked on network TV for a long time, but then my goals changed all of a sudden. “I think there comes a time in every woman’s life, in every person’s life, when work becomes less important and family becomes more important,” she said. “Between doing so many shows in different cities and COVID, most of us didn’t get to see our families for almost a year. It really proved to me that my heart is with my family right now.”
