The Titanic OceanGate Submarine has disappeared. In the middle of the Atlantic, there is a search and rescue operation going on right now. Several news sources say that on Sunday, a tourist submarine with 5 people on board went missing during a dive into the Titanic’s wreck.
BBC said that the small submarine lost touch with the surface about an hour and 45 minutes into its dive. Read on to learn more about the submarine that has gone lost.
Titanic Tourist Submersible Goes Missing
The sub-Titanic OceanGate has gone lost. OceanGate, a tour company, said that all options were being looked into to save the five people on board. The ticket for the eight-day trip, which includes dives to the wreck at a depth of 3,800m (12,500ft), costs about $250,000 (£195,000).
The rescue operation is being helped by government agencies, the US and Canadian navies, and private deep-sea companies. Five people are said to be on board the lost ship, which is thought to be OceanGate’s Titan submersible.
Lieutenant Jordan Hart of the US Coast Guard in Boston told CBS News that there is a “search and rescue operation” going on off the coast of Canada’s Newfoundland.
Monday afternoon, US Coast Guard Rear Adm. John Mauger said, “At this point, we think there are between 70 and 96 hours available.” He also said that a submarine, two planes, and radar buoys had been used to look for the ship.
Rear Adm Mauger also said that the area where the search is happening is “remote,” which makes operations hard. He also said that the relief teams were “taking this personally” and were doing everything they could to make sure everyone on the ship got home safely.
Hamish Harding, a British Explorer, is Among 5 Onboard the Missing Titanic Submersible
One of the people on the lost submarine is Hamish Harding, a British billionaire and explorer who is 58 years old. Over the weekend, he posted on social media to say that he would be going on an expedition to the Titanic wreck.
The business tycoon also said, “This mission is likely to be the first and only manned mission to the Titanic in 2023 because Newfoundland is having its worst winter in 40 years.” Later, he wrote, “A break in the weather has just come up, and tomorrow we’re going to try to dive.”
What Did Oceangate Expeditions Say About the Sub That Had Gone Missing?
OceanGate Expeditions said that “everything [was] about the people in the submersible and their families.” It also said, “We are very grateful to the many government agencies and deep sea companies that have helped us in our efforts to get back in touch with the submersible.”
The company planning the eight-day trip in its carbon-fibre submersible sees it as a “chance to step outside of everyday life and discover something truly extraordinary.” According to the company’s website, one trip is happening right now, and two more are scheduled for June 2024.
