Sohail Tanvir was the first player to win the Purple Cap award in 2008, which was the first year of the IPL. The Pakistani left-handed seamer took 22 wickets at an average of 12.09, which was very good. The first Indian cricket player to win the Purple Cap Award was RP Singh. During the 2009 IPL season, he took 23 wickets at a strike rate of 15.50. Both Dwayne Bravo and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have won the Purple Cap award twice.
