The Strange Case of Paramahansa Yogananda

It’s just a few hours now, he told his wife in March 1952 as he prepared to give a speech at a gathering at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Some claim that he attained “Mahasamadhi,” a zen-like condition in which a skilled Yogi intentionally leaves their body.

Paramahansa Believed In Teaching To Children

The Los Angeles Times referred to Yogananda as “the 20th century’s first superstar guru” since he was the first significant Indian teacher to immigrate to the United States and the first notable Indian to be invited to the White House (by President Calvin Coolidge in 1927).

After arriving in Boston in 1920, he began a lucrative cross-country speaking tour before settling in Los Angeles in 1925. He established a monastic order, taught followers, went on teaching tours, purchased homes for his organization in various California locations, and initiated thousands of people into Kriya Yoga over the course of the following 25 years.

SRF had more than 100 centers in both India and the US by 1952. They had organizations in almost all of the major American cities as of 2012. His “plain living and high thinking” beliefs drew disciples from many walks of life.


He propagated the idea that the cosmos is God’s cosmic movie and that people are only extras in the divine drama who undergo rebirth, echoing traditional Hindu teachings. He asserted that excessive identification with one’s current role—rather than the movie’s director or God—is the basis of mankind’s profound misery.
