Odisha Bus Tragedy: Police said on Monday that two buses crashed head-on in Odisha’s Ganjam district, killing 12 people from a wedding party and hurting seven others. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik both said they were saddened by the deaths caused by the accident. They also said that the next of kin of each person who died would get money as a gift. They hoped that those hurt in the crash would get better quickly.
Patnaik also said that the next of kin of each person who died would get Rs 3 lakh as a gift, and people who were hurt would get free care. He also told the state’s Finance Minister, B K Arukha, to get to the accident spot as soon as possible. The accident happened late Sunday night near Digapahandi on the Berhampur-Taptapani road, about 35 km from here. The wedding party bus crashed into another passenger car.
They had been to a wedding in Berhampur and were on their way back to Khandadeuli, which is near Digapahandi, when the accident happened. The SP said that a group of police officers went to the scene and took the injured people to hospitals.
“Seven members of a family and their relatives were among the 12 deceased,” another police officer said. He said that the people who were hurt are getting care at MKCG Medical College and Hospital and Digapahandi Hospital.
The cop said, “Two of them have been moved to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.” In the meantime, the Special Relief Commission has given each of the hurt people Rs 30,000 to pay for their medical care.
