About NHB
The lack of widespread access to long-term financing for individual households was identified by the Sub-Group on Housing Finance for the Seventh Five Year Plan (1985-1990), which then recommended the establishment of a national level institution to address this issue. The idea was reviewed by a High-Level Group led by Dr. C. Rangarajan, who was then the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and the Committee of Secretaries ultimately decided to endorse the National Housing Bank as an independent housing financing organization. The High-Level Group’s suggestions were adopted by the Indian government.
