Early life
Shannon was born on July 15, 1939 to Thomas A. Shannon and Elizabeth W. Richason Shannon in the south St. Louis neighbourhood of 7045 Winona Avenue. He was the second oldest of the couple’s six children. Before becoming the Prosecuting Attorney for the City of St. Louis in the early 1970s, Shannon’s father was a police officer with the St. Louis Police Department.
Shannon completed his elementary education at Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic School before moving on to high school at Christian Brothers College. In his senior year, he became the first and only athlete in Missouri High School history to earn the Player of the Year honor in both football and basketball.
After signing with Bing Devine, general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, Shannon left the University of Missouri in 1958 to begin his professional baseball career. Shannon, who considered himself a superior football player, has indicated that he likely would have stayed at Missouri and pursued a professional football career if football players were paid better during his day. Shannon may have been a Heisman Trophy contender if he had continued in school, according to his old coach Frank Broyles.
