Internet Ban Extended Till Saturday in Manipur: New acts of violence have been recorded in Manipur, which is a small state in the northeast of India. Since May 3, when a “Tribal Solidarity March” was held against the Meitei community’s request for ST status, at least 70 people are said to have been killed in racial violence.
Since the violence began, Internet services have been shut down to stop the spread of rumors and hate messages. But news from the ground shows that the state has a situation that has never happened before.
Manipur Violence Latest Update
In the northeastern state of Manipur, which has been hit by ethnic violence, the government extended the suspension of Internet services on Monday for the seventh time, until June 10. They did this to stop the spread of rumors, videos, photos, and messages that could affect law and order.
In a new notice, the Home Commissioner, H. Gyan Prakash, said that Internet services will be shut down until June 10 because the Director General of Police in Manipur said that there are still reports of things like homes and buildings being set on fire.
Manipur Internet Ban Extended Till Saturday
Around 10,000 people from the Army and the Assam Rifles have been sent to Manipur to bring peace back. The government of Manipur has banned internet access until June 10 to stop more trouble in the state, which has been hit by violence. On May 3, the ban was put in place.
In a Monday evening order, the state government said that internet services would be cut off for another five days, or until 3 p.m. on June 10. Violence between the Meiteis, who live in and around Imphal Valley, and the Kuki group, who live in the hills, has killed more than 70 people since May 3. This is because the Meiteis want to be included in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category.
Around 10,000 people from the Army and the Assam Rifles have been sent to the state to bring peace back. During his visit last week, Home Minister Amit Shah asked both the Meiteis and the Kukis to stay cool and peaceful and work to get things back to normal.
He also asked the people in the area to clear the roads, especially the ones on the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway-2, so that people could get the things they needed. The only way to get goods to different parts of the state is along the highway, which goes through the Senapati district in the hills and down to the capital city of Imphal in the valley. In Manipur, blocking a highway is nothing new. When this happens, important supplies are cut off, which makes everything much more expensive.

DGP Statement on Manipur Internet Ban
The ban has been extended until June 10 by an order from the state home commissioner, H. Gyan Prakash. This was done because the Manipur DGP said on Monday that there are still reports of arson from some parts of the state, and because anti-national and anti-social elements might use social media to spread rumors and false information and encourage people to do violent things.
The limit on mobile and broadband internet was first clamped on May 3 after clashes started between sections of Meitei and Kuki communities over the former’s demand for ST status. At least 75 people have died while over 35,000 others have been moved. Army is still posted while a partial curfew is still in force.
Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum, a group that represents the Kuki-Hmar-Zo communities in the hills districts, said on Monday that armed bad guys from the Meitei community burned down several Kuki towns in the last 48 hours. Some hill areas were also said to have been firing. However, there was no official word about these things.
