Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena was quoted by ANI in a tweet as saying, “As per the latest information we got at 11:45 p.m., 600 people were hurt and taken to the hospital. We don’t know the exact number of deaths yet, but the number we have so far is between 55 and 60.”
How did the Odisha Train Accident Happen?
The Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express left the Shalimar station at 3:20 pm and got to Balasore at 6:30 pm, according to officials. Around 7:20 pm, 10 to 12 cars of the train went off the track near Baleswar and fell onto the other track. At 6:55 pm, the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express crashed into the stalled coaches of the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah superfast express, which was going in the opposite direction. The crash involved three or four cars on this train.
After that, some of the wrecked coaches from the first crash were hit by the wagons of a goods train, which was a sad turn of events. Another story says that several coaches on the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah train that was going to Howrah went off the tracks at Bahanaga Baazar, near Balasore, and fell on the tracks next to them.
“These derailed coaches hit the 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and its coaches also overturned,” a top official told PTI. A goods train was also involved in the accident because the Coromandel Express’s derailed cars hit its wagons, the officer said.
Over 2,000 people came to the Balasore Medical College and Hospital in the middle of the night to help the hurt. Many of them also gave blood. Doctors told PTI that 30 surgeries have already been done on accident victims at the Balasore Medical College and Hospital.
