For some, a post-divorce fresh start entails a dramatic new haircut. Helen (Ellie Kemper) deals with the breakdown of her marriage in a more imaginative way in Happiness for Beginners by enrolling in a backcountry survival school while hiking the Appalachian Trail.
Vicky Wight’s adaptation of Katherine Center’s novel of the same name follows Helen and her odd gang of fellow hikers as they push themselves against nature. Bear traps and blisters, on the other hand, may be simpler to deal with than the entrance of gorgeous newcomer Jake (Luke Grimes). Will Helen discover more than just mosquitos in the wilderness?
In the photographs below, you can see Kemper and Grimes as Helen and Jake for the first time, and scroll down for more information about Happiness for Beginners.
What is Happiness for Beginners About?
Helen has always stayed on the cautious side. But now, newly divorced, she enrolls in a school that promises an “adventure of a lifetime” in the hopes of learning how to live — and love — again.
“I thought it was such a well-told story of one woman’s experience in getting to know herself better,” Kemper said of the film. “I was immediately excited about the prospect of playing a woman whose outlook on life isn’t so sunny when we first meet her.” Helen was neither.” “I’ve played a lot of hopeful rubes, and Helen was neither.”
