Gufi Paintal, who was best known for playing Shakuni mama in B.R. Chopra’s epic TV series Mahabharat, died on Monday in a Mumbai hospital due to age-related problems, his nephew Hiten Paintal said. He was 79.
“Unfortunately, he’s no more. He died at the hospital at around 9 a.m. His heart gave out. He died peacefully in his sleep,” Hiten revealed. Hiten had already told that his uncle was not doing well because of age-related health problems.
“He had high blood pressure and heart problems. He wasn’t feeling well for a while. Things got bad, so we took him to the hospital for monitoring. He has been in the hospital for seven or eight days. He was in serious condition at first, but now he is stable,” Hiten revealed at the same time.
Paintal has also been in Hindi movies like Suhaag and Dillag from the 1980s and TV shows like CID and Hello Inspector. But when his uncle played Shakuni Mama from the Mahabharata, he became well-known.
He has a son, a daughter-in-law, and a grandchild who will carry on after him.
The movies Dillagi (1978), Des Pardes (1978), Daava (1997), and Samrat & Co (2014) all feature Gufi as an actor. In the 1994 movie Suhaag, he played Akshay Kumar’s uncle on his mother’s side. Besides Mahabharat, he also appeared in TV shows like Bharat Ka Veer Putra – Maharana Pratap, Mrs Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuein, Karmaphal Daata Shani and Karn Sangini.
Besides being an actor, Gufi also directed a few TV shows and a movie named Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. With BR Films, he also worked as an assistant director, casting director and production designer.
The actor was the brother of popular comedian Paintal, who acted in films like Satte Pe Satta, Rafoo Chakkar, Parichay and others.
