SONITPUR AT A GLANCE

Tezpur is a great historically important city of Assam full of natural beauty. It seems that the best natural elegance is manifested at Tezpur. Tezpur is situated on the North bank of mighty river Brahmaputra, around some picturesque little hill stations. Tezpur is indeed an unrivalled small city for her natural elegance.

The beauty queen Tezpur has its own historical background. Sonitpur, as ancient Tezpur was known in the days of yore is a city steeped in mythology, legend and folklore. The “City of Blood” (Sonit or Tez means Blood, Pur means city) has its own historical origin in the legendary Usha – Aniruddha love story and of the fierce battle between “Hari”and “Hara”. Usha the daughter of the mighty Asura king Bana and Aniruddha, Grandson of lord Krishna, fell in love. Legend has it that Usha a princess of rare charm and beauty saw in her dream a handsome prince and fell in love with him. Her friend Chitralekha a talented artist, not only painted picture of the prince from Usha’s description, but also recognized him as Aniruddha grandson of Lord Krishna, the ruler of Dwaraka. Using her magical powers, Chitralekha spirited away Aniruddha to Usha’s boudoir where Usha secretly married Aniruddha under Gandharva rites without her father’s knowledge. When king Bana learned of the secret romance, he threw Aniruddha into prison. Lord Krishna then came to Sonitpur to rescue his grandson, where a fierce battle ensured as a result the whole city drenched in human blood, hence the name Sonitpur. In the battle of Hari (Lord Krishna) and Hara Shiva in the form of Banasura), Bana Vanquished and Usha and Anioruddha (Lord was were united forever.

Tezpur is full of some archeological materials and Mahabhairab Temple belongs the greatest Shivalinga in Asia. Tingeswar Dewaloy, Agnigarh, Da Parbatia Dwar, Bhairabi Mandir, Haleswar Dewaloy, Sukleswar Dewaloy, Sidheswar Dewaloy, Rudrapad Dawaloy, Nagsankar Mandir, etc.

Tezpur also known as Sonitpur and Harupeswar remained as important city throughout ages of history. Long after the days of ‘Purana’ several royal dynasty reigned here. Notable among them was Harzar Barman of the Salastambha dynasty. Tezpur was a centre of learning in those days as revealed by the notes of famous traveller Hue-in-Tsang and Fa Hien. During the British period Darrang district was established in 1834 with its head quarter at Tezpur paving the way for introduction of modern education.

The British set up 3 schools in Na-Duar and Bishwanath between 1826 and 1831, acknowledging the importance of the place and its strategic location with neighboring Arunachal Pradesh.

During the freedom struggle under Mahatma Gandhi people of the district took active part. Tezpur occupies a glorious chapter in the history of our freedom struggle.

The anti-colonial aspirations of the people struck a resending note during the famous Quit India movement of 1942. British bullets at Gohpur felled Swahid Kanaklata Boruah and Swahid Mukunda Kakati on 20th September 1942 and 14 others including Monohar Nath, Kumali Devi, Ratan Kachari etc. were killed by the British at Dhekiajuli on the same day, while they were trying to hoist the congress tri-colors flag atop the Gohpur and Dhekiajuli police station.

Tezpur is the centre of Art and culture in Assam. It was the centre of field of actions for many cultural doyen, artist and literature like Rup Konwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Natasurya Phani Sharma, Agnikabi Kamalakanta Bhattacharyya, Lambudar Bora, Padmanath Guhain Boruah, Karmaveer Chandranath Sharma, Tyagveer Hemchandra Boruah, Lokanayak Omeo kumar Das, etc.

Legendary Assamese cultural doyen Rup Konwar Jyoti Prasads Aganvala and Bishnu Prasad Rabha, both freedom fighter themselves, composed many a memorable patriotic song during this time to encourage the freedom fighters.

It is said that the historic incidents of Tezpur during the freedom struggle are yet to get proper national recognition. After independence, Tezpur went forward in the path of development along with other path of India. After opening of the Kaliabhomora Bridge over the Brahmaputra (1987), road connectivity his improved a lot.

The proposed Tezpur Medical College, state of the art institution of its kind will serve not only this historic place but also the entire North bank of Brahmaputra and neighboring Arunachal Pradesh.
